BREAKING THE SILENCE: Speak Up for Jesus


The following questions are to be used as a study aid for the sermon preached by Pastor Tommy Dove at the Grace Place on Sunday, November 17, 2013. To get the most from these questions, go to https://soundcloud.com/#graceplacehermitage and listen to the service first.

Icebreaker: (Get to know your fellow believers a little bit better using this week’s topic)
How many languages do you speak?
What foreign language did you study in school?
If you could learn a new language, what would it be?

Worship: (Optional for communities who have the time and talent)

Scripture: (Read the word together – use different readers, different versions, just read it)
Acts 4:1-31  (This would be a good one to act out.)

Lesson: (Delve deeper into the Word and into the sermon using open-ended questions)
This week a young student from Tennessee spoke boldly before his local Board of Education.  It takes courage and conviction to go against the ruling powers of the day.  May we have boldness to Speak Up for Jesus like Peter and John.

What had Peter and John done that made the rulers angry?
What did they command them to do?
How did Peter find his voice?
How do we find our courage to speak up for Jesus?
When has the conviction of your voice surprised even you?
How has the world tried to silence your voice?
What is our response to a silent world?
 
Prayer: (Share each other’s burdens, become a community of believers)
Pray for new community groups that will be forming, their leaders and hosts.

STEPS OF FAITH

Only the passage of time can judge how far we have travelled and how well we have followed the Lord in steps of faith. Time goes quickly and slowly simultaneously. We encounter tremendous obstacles along the way such as leaders with moral failings and a mountain of debt and the obstacles seems unsurmountable; yet, we put one step in front of the other placing our faith in God. “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” ― Corrie ten Boom   It takes courage and steadfastness to keep going.
