STEPS OF FAITH

Only the passage of time can judge how far we have travelled and how well we have followed the Lord in steps of faith. Time goes quickly and slowly simultaneously. We encounter tremendous obstacles along the way such as leaders with moral failings and a mountain of debt and the obstacles seems unsurmountable; yet, we put one step in front of the other placing our faith in God. “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” ― Corrie ten Boom   It takes courage and steadfastness to keep going. We have no choice really. We can’t give up! We will keep going in faith until the battle is truly won and Heaven is our home. An old choral hymn by Carlton Pearson says it well: We've come this far by faith Leaning on the LORD Trusting in His Holy Word He never failed me yet Oh' can't turn around We've come this far by faith . Discussion: What emotions did you feel today as the church building mortgage was burned? So we are alway...

HOLY SPIRIT: How's Your Fruit?

Icebreaker: Who is the gentlest person you know? What is the difference between gentleness and weakness? Overview: While working for an international company, a Christian was passed over for a promotion because he lacked the degree required for the position. The position was filled by a qualified candidate from an out-of-state branch of the company. The Christian had to work closely with the new hire but was determined not to like him. The office environment was filled with jealousy and rivalry. Management noticed. When the root is bitterness, imagine what the fruit might be. -- Woodrow Kroll As the months passed, the Christian continued to pursue his education and slowly a relationship developed between him and the new hire. The new hire was not a Christian and had a troubled personal life. The Christian became something of a mentor and spiritual adviser to the younger man. He prayed for him and the Holy Spirit began to work in the lives of both men.  ...

I'LL PRAY ABOUT IT -- Our Father

Icebreaker: What is the average age of a piece of clothing in your wardrobe? How often do you buy new clothes? Seasons? Trends? Prayer: During this series on prayer, determine to spend more time in personal prayer each day. As a group, pray before your discussion. Start a prayer log to record requests and answers. Check the church’s weekly email blast for needs to add to your log. Overview: Have you ever seen the TV show “Strange Inheritance?” The odd things that people inherit from their family is fascinating. So fascinating that the series is in its fourth season. Most of us have no need for the world’s largest bottle cap collection or a bug museum but the inheritance that our Heavenly Father has for us is worth everything. After all, He gave His precious son to buy it for us. Discussion: Review theme scripture from Matthew 6:5-15. Read Galatians 3:27-4:7. Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. -- Matthew 6:9 NLT Who is God? Why must His nam...

EMOTIONAL ISSUES: Joy, not Happiness

Icebreaker: What is the longest vacation you have ever taken? What is the shortest vacation you have ever taken? Overview: Our family is experiencing a sorrowful season with the death of two family members in four months. We are sad but we still have joy. We have the hope and promise that one day we will be reunited with our loved ones who lived for Christ. The sorrow will soften and sweet memories will remain. Our joy is not based on our circumstances but on the One that fills our spirit with the fruit of His Spirit. Discussion: Read John 16:16-24, Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,   23  gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. – Galatians 5:22-23 ESV What was Jesus trying to explain to the disciples? What does “a little while” mean to us? What is the difference between joy and happiness? On what is our hope based? ...
