FIREFIGHTERS: Unholy Contentment

Icebreaker: How did you spend the last weekend of summer? Overview: Pastor Ben used the illustration of how when we point a finger at someone, we have three fingers pointing back at ourselves. We may have good intentions in pointing a finger at someone. Perhaps we are discontented with the current situation and would like to see changes made for the better. Those three fingers pointing back at us remind us that we also have a part to play in the situation. By having a holy discontentment, God can use us to be part of the solution. Discussion: Holy Contentment Read Exodus 15:1-3. What was the source of the people of Israel’s holy contentment? What brings us holy contentment? Unholy Discontentment Read Exodus 17:1-3. What was the source of the people of Israel’s unholy discontentment? Unholy Contentment Read Exodus 32:1-6. What was the source of the people of Israel’s unholy contentment? Read Matthew 7:1-5. MEETING GOD IN THE FIRE: Set Ablaze in Worship

Being set ablaze individually Read Exodus 3:1-12. No longer being hunted for murder, Moses was alone with his thoughts and his animals. He caught a glimpse of a bush burning but not being consumed and it captured his attention. Something special was going on here. Something holy. God called Moses by name and reminded him that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses knew of the God of Israel, but now the relationship was personal. God was now the God of Moses as well. When God had Moses’ undivided attention and reverence, He gave Moses a big job. Questions to Discuss: What was Moses doing when he saw the burning bush? Why was Moses tending sheep in Midian instead of living in Egypt? What was the significance of the burning bush being on Mount Horeb? What job did God have for Moses? Why was Moses well suited for this job? Being set ablaze corporately Read Exodus 19:1-25. About three months after the people of Israel left Egypt, Moses met God on Mount Si...

Do Something! Potential

Icebreaker: What skill do you use now but found difficult to learn? What skill did you try but gave up learning? Overview: Read Exodus 4:1-17. Back in the 1960’s, classes taught the skill of writing in shorthand to prepare a person for a secretarial career. Shorthand was a way of recording quickly what a person said by using symbols instead of words. I had the unfortunate experience of taking a class in shorthand. The skill did not come easily to me. Fortunate for me, I had a good memory and was able to interpret the few scribbles I made and correctly type up what had been dictated. Technology soon made shorthand obsolete and I never needed the stupid skill anyway. The advent of the personal computers and email has made having an assistant of any kind obsolete. Poor Moses felt like me in shorthand class when God asked him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. “Lord, please! Send anyone else.” We all have potential and, even if we can’t see it, God sees it. What do yo...
