Do Something! Potential

Icebreaker:
What skill do you use now but found difficult to learn?
What skill did you try but gave up learning?

Overview:
Read Exodus 4:1-17.

Back in the 1960’s, classes taught the skill of writing in shorthand to prepare a person for a secretarial career. Shorthand was a way of recording quickly what a person said by using symbols instead of words. I had the unfortunate experience of taking a class in shorthand. The skill did not come easily to me. Fortunate for me, I had a good memory and was able to interpret the few scribbles I made and correctly type up what had been dictated. Technology soon made shorthand obsolete and I never needed the stupid skill anyway. The advent of the personal computers and email has made having an assistant of any kind obsolete.

Poor Moses felt like me in shorthand class when God asked him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. “Lord, please! Send anyone else.” We all have potential and, even if we can’t see it, God sees it. What do you have in your hand? God wants to put it to work for Him!

Discussion:
What did Moses say was the initial problem?
When God solved that problem, what was the next problem?
What was Moses’ real fear?

Activities:
What potential do you possess?
How has our past prepared us for our future?
Why are we afraid of failing?
How does that fear keep us from trying?

As a group, continue to discuss the needs in your community and your response to them. What skills and resources are available through your group? What is God placing on your heart to do as a group?

Prayer:
As a group, pray for God to open your eyes to your full potential.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
