Fellowship:

Icebreaker:
What is the best fireworks display you have ever seen?
How would you feel about a sky full of angels singing?

Scripture:
Luke 3:8-20, John 1:29

Lesson:
The prophets had told of the arrival of a Messiah but the people of God never expected Him to show up as a defenseless baby born in a pen designated for animals.  They expected the Messiah to be a king who saved them from the rule of the Romans instead of a Lamb to be sacrificed for their sins.  They certainly didn’t expect the Good News of the Messiah’s birth to be heralded to a bunch of working class shepherds.

What did the people of God expect of the Messiah?
What was the significance of Jesus being called The Lamb of God?
What things do we misunderstand about the Messiah?
What did the shepherds understand about the baby Jesus?
How important was it for them to find the baby?
Where do you need to go to find Jesus?

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
