Fellowship:

Icebreaker:
What is the biggest opportunity you have ever been given?
How did it work out?
What is the biggest opportunity you have ever passed up?

Scripture:
Jonah 1:1-17, 2:9, 3:1-5

Lesson:
Have you ever observed a parent bargaining with a child about going somewhere?  As an innocent by-stander, it can be quite humorous.  “Do you want to go to the grocery store with me?  I will get you ice cream afterwards.”  The child’s answer is always “No!”  God is not a bargaining parent.  He did not give Jonah a choice or a promise of a treat afterwards.  God said, “Go” to which the petulant child in Jonah said, “No.”

God’s Call is Unmistakable.  Jonah 1:1-17
Why do you think God assigned Nineveh to Jonah?
What can we learn from Jonah’s initial refusal to obey God?
Why do we run from God?

We Renew Our Mission when we remember our own Salvation.  Jonah 2:9
How sincere was Jonah’s prayer while in the fish?
Why did God give him a second chance to do the right thing?
What was the result of Jonah’s obedience?

Jonah’s Second Chance.  Jonah 3:1-5
Why did God show mercy to Nineveh?
What was Jonah’s response to that mercy?
How does this story end?  (Write Jonah Chapter 5.)

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
