BROKEN: Broken Communication

Daily devotionals have been prepared to accompany the First Quarter Series, BROKEN.  They are available at the Welcome Center or online at www.gpbrokenstudy.blogspot.com.  The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Senior Pastor, Tommy Dove, at the Grace Place on Sunday, January 29, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.   Click on “Media” and then “BROKEN” to view the video.

Small group members are encouraged to bring their completed daily devotionals to their weekly group sessions to share their BROKEN discoveries with their group.  For more information on participating in a Life Group study, contact Pastor Jon Green.

Weekly Overview: (skip if video is used)
We learn to speak as babies but it takes a lifetime to learn to communicate.  To have effective communication, we must not only speak but also listen.  When either the speaking or the listening stops, the communication is broken.

Broken communication can occur between spouses, friends, family, co-workers, church members and even between us and God.  When communication is broken, misunderstandings occur.  Instructions are lost.  Cooperation is forfeited.  Fellowship is disturbed.

When our communication with God is broken, we need to stop speaking and start listening.  Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.  We must re-train our ear to be receptive to what God is saying to us in our broken world.

Weekly Discussion Questions: (Italicized questions come from daily devotional)

Read Matthew 5:21-26
Why is calling someone a fool so bad?
Why is talking not the same as communicating?
How should we handle a dispute with someone?
What are the consequences of broken communication?
How is our relationship with God affected by our disputes and angry words?

Read James 3:1-18
Where do you need to replace hurtful words with kind ones?
How does modern technology help or hurt communication?
What new habits do you need to communicate better?  At home?  At work?  At church?
What new habits do you need to hear from God more effectively?
How can you set an example in your communication?  At home?  At work?  At church?

Prayer:
Pray for control of your tongue.
Pray for improved communication in your marriage, family, workplace, church.

Pray for improved communication with God.
