Psalm 23: The Lord is my Shepherd

The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Rev. Norm Patton at the Grace Place on Sunday, May 7, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.  Click on “Media” to view the video.  For more information on participating in a Life Group study, contact Pastor Jon Green.

Weekly Warm-up:
How many pairs of shoes do you own?
How many ball caps do you own?
Which is your favorite and why?

Weekly Overview:
For the next two months, we will be studying Psalm 23.  You may have memorized this Psalm as a child.  If so, refresh your memory.  If not, use these eight weeks to commit it to memory using your favorite translation.  This week’s verse is “The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need” from NLT.  Let that verse soak into your heart and mind.  What more do you need?  How can you start living with less?
Weekly Discussion Questions:
Read Psalm 23 together as a group (decide on a common translation or have copies of Pastor Tommy’s favorite NLT version for everyone to read and memorize together over the next 8 weeks.)

Make a list of words that describe what a shepherd does for the sheep:
Why did Jesus say He is our Shepherd?  (John 10:11)
How does Jesus know what you need?  (John 10:14)
What does having all you need mean to you? (Psalm 84:11, Matthew 6:8)
Why is contentment so difficult?
Where can you start to live a simpler life?
What do you do with your excess?
How can God supply the needs of others though your excess? (Psalm 37:25)

Group Prayer:
Pray contentment in your life.
Pray for Pastor Tommy’s sabbatical.

Pray for Pastor Patton.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
