Psalm 23: Rest and Refreshment

The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Interim Pastor, Norm Patton, at the Grace Place on Sunday, May 14, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.  Click on “Media” to view the video.  For more information on participating in a Life Group study, stop by the Welcome Center.

Weekly Warm-up:
What is your favorite form of R & R?
What R & R do you have planning this summer?

Weekly Overview:
In my family, people who had time to rest were lazy.  My 99-year old uncle says the key to a long life is to have something to do every day.  That type of upbringing stays with you.  On extra busy days, I have to self-enforce a mandatory rest period.  God built us to need rest.  He instituted a weekly mandatory rest period called Sabbath. In the 2nd verse of Psalm 23, the Shepherd lets us rest in green meadows and leads us beside peaceful streams.  Sounds like the perfect place for a mandatory rest period!

Weekly Discussion Questions:
Read Psalm 23 from three different translations.

What do you feel about the word rest?
Why is rest such a hard concept for modern society?
When do you find it hard to rest?
What kind of rest does God provide?
Why did the Shepherd lead the sheep to a peaceful stream?
How do we receive the Living Water?  (John 7:37-39)
How are we replacing Living Water with cracked cisterns? (Jeremiah 2:13)

Group Prayer:
Pray for appreciation of rest.
Pray for Pastor Tommy sabbatical.

Pray for Pastor Patton.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
