Tell a story about your favorite human father.

Weekly Overview:
King David who wrote the 23rd Psalm was very familiar with anointing.  He was anointed three times as king.  But anointing wasn’t just for kings and priests, it was also used for grooming, wound care and as a sign of honor to a guest.  The disciples used oil to anoint the sick.  Jesus said we will be anointed with the Holy Spirit that brings us power!

Oil was a precious commodity so the use of it to anoint someone was always special.  In the not too distant past, men used oil to style their hair.  One product, Brylcreem, had an ad that said, “a little dab’ll do ya?”  With the anointing of God, we do not have to worry about using too much.  David said, “You honor me by anointing my head with oil.  My cup overflows with blessings.”  The Spirit of God’s anointing is available in abundance!

Weekly Discussion Questions:
Have a volunteer recite Psalm 23.

Why would someone anoint someone’s head with oil?
Why were objects anointed with oil?
How do we use the anointing with oil today?
Read 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
What does it mean to us to be anointed by the Holy Spirit?
How do we get the anointing of the Holy Spirit?
Why do we need the sanctifying of the Holy Spirit?
What blessings do we receive as a part of the anointing?

Group Prayer:
Pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
