THE PATIENCE OF JOB: His Testimony

The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Lead Pastor Tommy Dove at the Grace Place on Sunday, August 20, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.  Click on “Media” to view the video.
Weekly Warm-up:
What are your eclipse day plans?
Why do people get fixated on one event such as the eclipse?
Compare the apoca-eclipse mania to the Star of Bethlehem excitement.

Weekly Overview:
We have all met someone face-to-face whom we had previously only heard about or talked with on the phone or by email.  Most of the time, they do not look like they sound or how they appear in a photograph.  People we have only seen on TV or in the movies are usually much shorter or smaller than they seem on the big screen when we meet them in person.  Job had heard of God, he had worshipped God, his life had been above reproach; but when he saw God, Job realized how great God truly was.  When troubles come and we question God, we should remember God’s question to Job: “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?”  We then see how small we are compared to our Mighty God!
Weekly Discussion Questions:
Read Job 42:1-6

What has happened to Job since we left him in Chapter 2?
Why were his friends giving him the wrong counsel?  (Job 18:1-7)
What was Job’s attitude toward his sufferings?  (Job 27:1-6)
Why did God reprimand Job for his attitude?  (Job 38:1-7)
What was Job’s response to God’s reprimand?  (Job 42:5-6)
How does our attitude change when we know God?
How does thinking long term bring clarity to a situation?

Group Prayer:
Pray for those in the midst of troubles.
Pray for the list of church weekly needs.

Pray for long range vision.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
