MY PARENTS TAUGHT ME: Faithfulness

The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Lead Pastor Tommy Dove at the Grace Place on Sunday, September 3, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.  Click on “Media” to view the video.
Weekly Warm-up:
How do you define success?
What makes you feel successful?
Why are Americans performance driven?

Weekly Overview:
This week’s parable is sometimes used to promote the use of one’s physical talents causing people to think their “talent” is less important than others.  But the word talent, as used in this scripture, is a weight measure equal to approximately 75 pounds.  In today’s economy, one talent of silver would be worth about $16,500.  The master was entrusting his servants with enormous wealth and responsibility.  He did not give some servants more because they were physically talented.  He trusted some more than others based on their ability to be faithful with the treasure.  Our parents taught us that being faithful is way more important than being talented!
Weekly Discussion Questions:
Read: Matthew 25:14-30

What do you have to offer?  (Think attitudes not abilities)
Why is faithfulness more important than talent?
What reward does the faithful receive in the story?
Why do they receive the same reward?
What is the Biblical definition of success?
How does God equip the faithful?
What can we do together if we are faithful to God’s plan?

Extra Credit:
Moses striking the rock – Numbers 20:6-12
Gideon’s 300 men – Judges 7

Group Prayer:
Pray for the list of church weekly needs.
Pray for better attitudes instead of better abilities.

Pray for those caught up in a performance mentality.

Scripture: Luke 2:8-12 Lesson: We have heard the Christmas story so many times that we hurry through some parts so we can get to the wise men brought gifts part.  This time let’s focus in on the “He is Christ, the Lord” part.  It was, and still is, the best part of the whole story.  Our Savior has come!

SET OUR HEARTS ABLAZE: A Desire for His Presence

Icebreaker: What food do you crave in the summer? What is your favorite homemade ice cream flavor? Overview: The story of Jesus on the road to Emmaus is one we usually only read at Easter and, even then, not often enough. It is a human-interest story, one where we can imagine ourselves as one of Jesus’s followers. To hear Jesus explain the scriptures that referred to the Lord Himself must have been amazing! But it was challenging to hear the stranger rebuke them for not having enough faith in the scriptures and realize later they were in the presence of Jesus. When we experience Jesus’s presence, we crave more. Discussion: Read Luke 24:13-35. What was the mood of the two followers as they walked home? Why did Jesus hide His identity from them? What did Jesus use to explain the crucifixion to them? What prompted them (perhaps husband and wife or siblings) to invite Jesus home with them? What caused the fire they felt within their hearts as they talked with Je
