MY PARENTS TAUGHT ME: Work Ethic

The following questions can be used as a weekly recap in a small group setting or as a personal study aid for the sermon preached by Lead Pastor Tommy Dove at the Grace Place on Sunday, September 10, 2017.  Past sermons are available offline at www.nashvillechurch.com.  Click on “Media” to view the video.
Weekly Warm-up:
What were your chores as a child?
What was your first job?
What is your current job?

Weekly Overview:
“I miss the fresh vegetables,” said the lady at the table.  As our American society has changed through the decades from an agricultural to an industrial and now a service based society, we have become more and more disconnected from our food and the work required to produce it.  A hundred years ago if you wanted fresh veggies, you walked out to your garden.  Fifty years ago, you would buy locally produced, fresh veggies from the nearby produce stand.  Today, we can buy any “fresh” fruit or vegetable we desire from anywhere in the world at our local supermarket.  We have become lazy when it comes to working for our food.  Hopefully, we have not become lazy when it comes to working for the Lord.  Being a believer requires daily dedication and hard work!
Weekly Discussion Questions:
Read 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 and Colossians 3:22-24

Why do you think Paul made a point to say he worked for his keep?
Why is it important to be perceived as a hard worker?
What happens when we become idle?
If we are saved by grace, why do we need to be workers?
How does working at our jobs reflect on us as Christians?
Who are you working for each day?  Boss?  Self?  Family?  God?
How can you make your secular work more spiritual?

Group Prayer:
Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Irma.
Pray for the list of church weekly needs.
Pray for purpose in all your work.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
