SET OUR HEARTS ABLAZE: Flammable Living

Icebreaker:
What are examples of places where excitement is contagious?
How do people respond to the excitement?

Overview:
Excitement is contagious. Sales organizations use the excitement of rewarding a few superstars with plaques and trips as a way to motivate all the sales team. When surrounded by cheering, successful sales people, everyone catches the vision of what is possible. When we are living a life set on fire for Christ, it is impossible for the flame not to spread to those around us.

Discussion:
Read Acts 4:1-22.

Formula for Fire
What were Peter and John doing that got them thrown in jail?
What gave Peter the boldness to speak so plainly to the rulers?

Fueled by Boldness
How did the fire of the Holy Spirit help spread the gospel?
Why were the religious rulers in such a difficult position?
What did they command Peter and John NOT to do?

You can’t stop it!
What was Peter’s response to the command?
How is the gospel spread?
When have you felt compelled to speak of Jesus?

Prayer:
Pray for a boldness in your daily life so others will catch flame because of your witness.

Daily Scripture Reading: “Flammable Living”
Monday, August 26 — When we are living a flammable life, the fire spreads to those around us. Be a witness today to what God has done for you. Share the flame! Read 1 John 4:13-16. Verse 14: “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world.”

Tuesday, August 27 — The power of the Holy Spirit is living in you. Your life reads like a great book of faith. Don’t be afraid to share that powerful faith with those around you. Read Acts 10:44-48. Verse 44: “While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.”

Wednesday, August 28 — When we have faith in God, we already have the victory. The Holy Spirit gives us boldness to spread the Good News. Read 1 John 5:4-8. Verse 4: “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith.”

Thursday, August 29 — None of us have been given the ministry of Paul, thankfully, but we have been given a ministry. Fulfill the purpose God has given you. Read Acts 20:17-24. Verse 24: “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

Friday, August 30 — We all have our story to tell. Pray for the Holy Spirit to set your heart ablaze so that all around you can enjoy the fire! Read Luke 9:23-27. Verse 26: “For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when He comes in His glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
