FIREFIGHTERS: I'm Not Hungry

Icebreaker:
How do you feel about milk? Lover or hater?
What is your favorite ice cream?

Overview:
I have never been a milk lover. I can’t remember ever drinking a whole glass of the stuff. I used only enough milk to wet the cereal in the bowl. A few months ago, I was diagnosed with a cow’s milk allergy. There is nothing that will make you want something more than not being able to have it. A tall, frosty glass of chocolate milk, a solid chunk of sharp Cheddar, a double scoop of cookies and cream ice cream or a long string of mozzarella. . .these are the things of which my dreams are made. Why is it that we are surrounded by the Spirit of God, but we have little desire for the warmth of His Fire within us? We are spoiled children who are satisfied with milk. Our lack of hunger is fighting God’s fire.

Discussion:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Matthew 5:6 ESV.

Infants Need Milk

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation. 1 Peter 2:2 ESV.

What is the purpose of spiritual milk?

Not Trying to Understand

Read Hebrews 5:11-14.

Why is milk not enough?
Why were they ignoring the message?
What happens to a child who never progresses to solid food?
What happens to a Christian?

Solid Food is for the Mature

Why do Christians need to be mature?
Whose responsibility is it to learn to eat solid food?
How do we benefit from being hungry?

Prayer:
Pray for a spiritual hunger in yourself and our congregation.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
