FUNDAMENTALS 2.0: What it means to be saved

Icebreaker:
How many pumpkin spice items have you consumed this week?
What is your favorite fall flavor?

Overview:
This month’s sermon series digs deeper into the fundamentals of our faith with Fundamentals 2.0. Nicodemus was a ruler of the Jews, a highly educated and respected teacher of the law. He knew the fundamentals of faith; yet, he struggled to understand the truth that Jesus revealed to him. Just like our smartphones, Nicodemus needed an upgrade. What does it mean to be saved?

Discussion:
Read John 3:10-21.

Jesus sees us for who we are

Pastor Ben played the “Dove Real Beauty Sketches” video to illustrate the difference between how we see ourselves and how others see us. (Find on You Tube by searching Dove or follow this link https://youtu.be/litXW91UauE.)

How did Nicodemus see himself?
How did Jesus see him?
Why do we need to be honest about who we are?

See Jesus for who He is

Who do we see Jesus to be?
Why is it important for us to see Jesus as Savior?
How can we upgrade our understanding of salvation?

“Salvation is God’s gift to the believer. However, our continuing walk with the Lord is dependent upon our obedience to His Word. In Christ we are not only saved but we are also constantly being saved as we walk the highway of holiness with Him.” – Arlo F. Newell

Why is salvation a lifelong journey?
How can we help young believers along the journey?

“It is not about the numbers. It is more than a moment. It is a lifelong commitment to a new way of life.” – Pastor Ben Mills

Prayer:

Pray for ones who need to see themselves the way Jesus see them -- as someone dearly loved in need of the salvation made possible by Jesus.

I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Tough Love

Icebreaker: What is your favorite Christmas movie? What is your favorite Christmas movie quote? Overview: In the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” angel Clarence Odbody is forced to lovingly deliver some tough love when George wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants his wish lamenting that there must be an easier way to get his wings. After George has a frightening experience of what life would have been like had he never been born, Clarence says, “ Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?” In the end, George realizes how wonderful his life truly is despite its difficulties. Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.   -- Warren W. Wiersbe God loved us so much that He sent His Son as the Baby Jesus to redeem us. He has placed preachers, teachers and a church in our lives to give us direction so we can mature in our faith. He disciplines us wi...
