Icebreaker:
What are you currently reading?
Have you or how many times have you
read the Bible through?
Overview:
While attending a Christian retreat, we were taught the
practice of Lectio Divina. Basically, you select one Scripture passage which you
read slowly, then you read the passage again reflecting on words that stand out
to you, after reading the passage a third time you pray for God to speak to you
through His Word and repeat back what you heard Him say and finally you thank
God and rest in His Word. The Bible is God-breathed and useful for our development
as Christians. This week during your quiet time try Lectio Divina using today’s
Scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
Discussion:
Read
2 Timothy 3:10-17.
Sola Scriptura (Latin: by scripture alone) was a
foundational doctrinal principle of the Protestant Reformation held by many of
the Reformers, who taught that authentication of scripture is governed by the
discernible excellence of the text as well as the personal witness of the Holy
Spirit to the heart of each man.
The Christian’s view is formed out of the objective,
revealed truth of Scripture. It rests on absolutes. – Chuck Colson, The Body
Confidence in the Lord
Why did Timothy have confidence in Paul’s teaching?
Against what standard should Christian teaching be measured?
Why did the early church need purpose? Faith? Patience? Love?
Endurance?
How can we use these gifts today to reach people?
Confidence in His Word
We believe the Bible to be the Word of God because
within itself it bears the divine quality. In addition to the unity and harmony
of it, you soon sense how deeply it fits the needs and condition of man, and
you see a startling realism about man’s sin and depravity. – R. Eugene Sterner,
I was thinking about the church…
What part did God’s Word play in your salvation?
Why do we need to hold fast to the Truth of the Bible?
How do we equip ourselves for doing God’s work?
How can studying the Bible develop our wisdom?
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the
servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. – 2 Timothy
3:16-17.
Prayer:
Pray for a deeper understanding of God’s Holy Word, the
Bible.
